Secret Marsh

I’ve been trying to get out and walk more this year. Mostly out in the woods behind my neighborhood. There are a network of little trails that go up and down the hills and follow the creeks. The woods are full of birds. Wrens, bluebirds, woodpeckers and many others. Lately i’ve seen a lot of the large Pileated Woodpeckers.

The other day I found a little used trail that headed off into a muddy low lying area. It ended up in a little marsh, full of cattails and large dead trees. Its a secret little wild place, bordered by typical DC suburbs, a metro bus depot, radio towers, neighborhoods and the Capital Beltway.
The little marsh always seems to be full of birds, Great blue Herons, Sparrows, Flickers, and Red-winged blackbirds.

Today this Red-shouldered Hawk soared overhead, the whole marsh became silent and the smaller birds hid in the underbrush. He landed on a snag and surveyed the area for a minute, then took off and circled a few times before leaving. When he was out of sight the area burst into noise.

A group of Wood Ducks hidden in the grass and trees. Hope to get some better photos of them.
